Storage in the Bedroom: Bedroom Storage Ideas

Most people could do with some bedroom storage ideas. Storage in the bedroom is not always high on their list of priorities when choosing their bedroom furniture. All too often people select beautiful looking furniture for their bedroom and then find they are short of storage for bedding, towels, clothing and so on. Here are some bedroom storage ideas to help you avoid this.

Chests and Dressers

The more drawers in a chest, the less the storage space. Each drawer takes up a fair proportion of the available space in a chest, so while that piece with all these lovely drawers looks very attractive, you might be better with fewer drawers and more storage space. You can easily separate your clothes in a larger tidy drawer rather than have separate drawers for your sheets and pillowcases for example.

When purchasing chests, check the construction of the drawers. In particular, check just inside the drawers, where the sides meet the front. French dovetails are set a bit away from the side of the front drawer panel, while English dovetail joints are right on the edges. This means that English dovetails offer more internal drawer space, so either check it out or ask. If your drawer is 18 inches deep and the dovetails are set in by even by just one inch you lose 36 square inches of storage.

Armoires

Make sure your armoire is as tall as possible so as to make best use of the vertical height. Some people prefer to have cabinets constructed to fit an entire wall, making the very best use of the available area. The only problem here is that if you are selling the house it might be more difficult if viewers do not want fitted furniture.

Nevertheless, fitted furniture definitely provides you with significantly more storage. Quite often the space either side of an armoire is wasted, and fitted furniture looks neater than a row of cabinets and chests. If you do choose an armoire, then make sure it includes plenty storage room. Many also have deep internal shelves and overhead storage cupboards.

Underbed Storage

Underbed storage is one of the more popular bedroom storage ideas. Many people select their beds just for the storage available. This could be in the form of a pair of drawers either side of the bed, or a large drawer at the end. The side drawers are usually best, because they make use of the whole of the space beneath.

Even children's beds are available with underbed storage. If not, then try to purchase a bed that is open below, so you can fit storage boxes on castors. This is almost as good as drawers. It is waste of space if you have unused space beneath your bed.

Ottomans

Hollow ottomans with a hinged lid can be used as a seat at your dresser, or just as general seating in your bedroom. They are useful for storing spare bedding such as duvet covers or sheets. They are very attractive items of furniture, and can be painted or covered with a fabric of your choice.

Nightstands

Choose nightstands for their storage rather than looks. As with any bedroom furniture where storage in the bedroom is an issue, big is best where it can be accommodated. Rather than leave six inches of space between a nightstand or chest and a wall, buy a wider nightstand or chest! It's not as if you will have lots of visitors in your bedroom as you would in your living room and dining room! You can afford to sacrifice looks to a certain extent in order to increase your storage. By fitting furniture tight up to corners you will achieve that, so if you purchase a 20 inch nightstand when you could fit 26 inches, you are wasting good space.

General Bedroom Storage Ideas

Believe it or not, some people buy bedroom furniture online without checking what each piece looks like inside. You are strongly advised to visit a furniture showroom and closely examine each piece before ordering. If storage in the bedroom is an issue, then you should never purchase bedroom furniture without checking its storage capacity. What you see on the outside might not reflect the available internal storage space.

Even the external design can indicate wasted space. Some designs offer drawers that are significantly less wide than the overall width of the piece. Others have tall legs where an extra drawer could be fitted. Here at Patterson furniture, we offer you a free design service and can help you with any problems regarding storage in the bedroom. We have many bedroom storage ideas to offer you that do not involve excessive cost.
