How Patterson Atlanta Furniture Store Offers High Quality Home Furniture

Both our Patterson Atlanta furniture stores can are able to offer a very high quality of product, and Patterson Furniture is one of the most respected stores that offer furniture in Atlanta. It would be easy to say that we choose only the best furniture for our customers, but that would be trite - every store will say the same thing.

In fact, at Patterson Furniture in Atlanta, we do not simply select the best available, but the best 'made' available. We offer furniture hand-made to very high standards, and using the traditional cabinet making techniques use by your grandparents and their grandparents. Such furniture is built to last, as you will find if you purchase Stickley, Simply Amish or Sherrill Furniture.

A melamine-laminated tabletop might serve you well for while, but will it last as long as a solid oak top that is inches thick and gleaming with a beautiful wax finish? Will it look as good? Will it draw murmurs of appreciation from your dinner guests? A solid oak kitchen table is built to last, and even beautifully French polished dining room tables will outlast the cheaper, poorly constructed pretenders to their crown.

Gustav Stickley: Visible Jointing Techniques

The secret is not just in the finish, but also in the construction. Gustav Stickley took the view that if he was going to use traditional but powerful jointing techniques in his furniture, then these joints should be visible - and he designed his furniture just that way. The mortises with pinned tenons were visible, as were the English dovetails joints. He also made good use of quarter sawn oak to display the medullary rays and flecks that such a method of cutting the wood reveals. Splined miter joints in mirror frames made them strong.

His drawers were put together using dovetails all round, and he finished not only the visible parts of a drawer, but also those not normally seen such as the underside of the drawer base. A central guiding rail under each drawer made sure there was no sideways movement, so the rawer ran smoothly. He believed in a job well done, visible or not.

His legacy continues with the L. & J.G. Stickley furniture company that still employs these standards of craftsmanship - you can see these very same techniques in the furniture Stickley still hand-makes today. Patterson is an Atlanta Furniture store that still offers this standard of workmanship in its Stickley range.

Strong Upholstered Furniture

The same traditional American craftsmanship is used in upholstered furniture, where the jointing techniques cannot be seen. Sherrill Furniture employs the same standards in its chair and sofa frames. Mortise and tenons, pinned where needed, and many other traditional jointing techniques are employed to make sure that your chair sofa, or even sofa bed, is absolutely solid and stable.

The solidity of a piece of wooden furniture is highly dependent on the solidity of the joints used. When made correctly, furniture can be crafted without nails, screws or even glue. Your great grandfathers had none of these unless they made them themselves, so proper jointing methods were developed that made such artificial fixings unnecessary. Today's higher quality furniture is put together using these same techniques.

The strength of a sofa lies not in its upholstery, but in the hidden structure underneath that beautiful cover. The structure to which the springs in the seat and back are fixed, comprising strong webbing tacked to stout hardwood rails that support the weight of 2-4 people. It is what you cannot see that comprises the quality of a chair or sofa, or even of a sofa bed, not what you can see.

Purchasing Atlanta Furniture

For that reason, second-class furniture can be passed off as top quality. How can you tell the difference when you purchase Atlanta furniture? This is often not possible until after you have purchased it. However, you can make sure of buying quality Atlanta furniture by purchasing items crafted by established and well-respected America firms such as Sherrill, Southwood or L. & J.G. Stickley.

Between these companies, and also The Custom Shoppe, Simply Amish, American Craftsman and the many others that Patterson Furniture offer to you, you will find the very highest quality of American craftsmanship. No Atlanta furniture store can offer more.
