ABOUT US
Patterson's now has two locations!-- Lilburn, Georgia and
Roswell, Georgia
Patterson Furniture Company was started in 1960 by Virgil Patterson, his wife
Rosalie, and their daughter, Patricia Sealy. Virgil Patterson had been a
successful furniture salesman in Nashville for much of his life.
He was 63 years old when he decided to move to Atlanta to be closer to
his family. He was offered a good furniture sales job in Atlanta with a
large established furniture showroom. However, after moving, he
was immediately unhired because the company had not realized that he was
"too old". (this was before age discrimination laws). Then
Patricia Sealy, their daughter, suggested that she and her mother and
dad, open up their own furniture store. So they invested their life
savings and rented a building on the corner of Buford Hwy and Clairmont
in Chamblee. It was there that Patterson Furniture Company began
in 1960.
Business was shaky for the first three years, and
the Pattersons even lived in the back of the store so they could put all
of their income back into the business. But after three years, business
began to pick up, due in part to Patricia Sealy's determination to
become a dealer for a high quality well known furniture line. In 1963,
after persistent requests, Pennsylvania House finally decided to
give Patterson Furniture a chance to sell their merchandise.
Business grew substantially over the next several years, and Patterson's
was becoming known in Atlanta as a high quality store with excellent
service. In 1973, thirteen years later, Fred Sealy, Patricia's husband, came into the
business. Having been president of a candy factory, he brought with him
years of valuable financial and management experience. Two years later
Patterson's had outgrown the Buford Hwy location, and the company moved
to its current location in Lilburn, between Stone Mountain and
Snellville. Now, Patterson's operates as a third generation
family business, with the addition of Mr. Patterson's grandsons, Cliff and Warren. Both have worked many years in the furniture business and
with Patterson Furniture Company. In 1978,
Patterson's became a proud dealer of another fine line, L & J.G.
Stickley. Stickley had long been recognized for their
pure designs and superb craftsmanship, but the company had fallen onto
harder times by the early 70's with only 25 employees remaining. Then in
1974, Alfred and Amini Audi purchased the company and guided it to new
levels of accomplishment. With the reissue of the mission oak collection
in 1989, the company's growth only accelerated and now Stickley
employs over 1400 artisans and craftspeople. Over
the last 27 years, Stickley and Patterson Furniture, both family
businesses, have grown their businesses together . Now we are proud to
have opened a second store in Roswell. Opened in October 2004, our
Roswell location carries all of Stickley's collections, which
includes Traditional, 21st Century, French, Metropolitan, John
Widdicomb, the Williamsburg reserve collection, Craftsman Leather, Fine
Upholstery, and Mission Oak and Cherry. Our Lilburn store continues to
also carry all of the Stickley collections. With the help
of its long time dedicated employees, Patterson's has developed a reputation for
high quality, excellent design help, and great service. We operate under the simple assumption that if we carry only
the finest merchandise, offer competitive prices, and treat
our customers right, then we will continue to prosper. |
