Dining Room Furniture Design: How to Design a Dining Room

Dining room furniture design is a different concept to knowing how to design a dining room. Our purpose here is to cover each of these concepts in terms of the furniture we can offer you here on the Patterson furniture website.

It is important to understand that very few furniture outlets and showrooms manufacture their own furniture, and we at Patterson Furniture are no different.  However, we sure have a good eye for it - just as you likely have. We can offer you some of the most beautiful and well constructed furniture made in America by our country's most respected home designers, cabinet makers and furnishers.

Why should we make furniture when there are many companies far better at it than we are? Nope, we leave it to the experts, just as they leave it to us to sell it for them. That's what we do best. We do it best because we know a lot about American furniture, and what makes it tick. We know the difference between good and bad, but we also know that the ultimate judge of the products we offer on this website is you!

That is one reason why we do not sell products on this site - we know you need to see it first, but we also know that you want to have at least something in mind when you walk into our Roswell or Lilburn showrooms. Once you open that door we can help you, but here is some advance information that will enable you to ask the right questions.

Dining Room Furniture: What Is It?

What exactly is covered by that term: "dining room furniture?" A dining table and chairs for sure, but what else?  For some people that is enough, but for others a dining room is unfurnished without a credenza, sideboard, buffet, cocktail cabinet or server - or all of these! Quite frankly, your dining room can be what you want it to be; it can contain whatever furniture you wish - assuming you have the room.

Many people hate bare corners, and wall units and corner cabinets can be used to take care of these. Buffets and credenzas can be as simple or elaborate as you want them to be - large rooms can tolerate large buffets, with side serving leaves and cocktail cabinets attached. If you have no room for these, simple artifacts such as floor clocks and lamps can break up the height to make a room look larger.

Expand the Room

Smaller dining rooms look better with just the table and chairs. However, it is possible to make a small dining room look larger by the intelligent use of décor such as light-colored walls, individual rugs rather than fitted carpets and intelligent placement of mirrors with respect to external lighting and windows.

Lighting is also important, and while chandeliers look good in a dining room, small rooms might look better with individual wall lamps arranged round the room - perhaps one small 40W wall lamp each 8-10 feet. Lighting can go a long way in highlighting individual items of accent furniture in a dining room - spotlights are ideal for this. A single rack of three spotlights can be adjusted to highlight various accents in a dining room on different occasions.

Dining Room Tables and Chairs

It can be and has been argued that furniture in a well appointed dining room is less important than the accent pieces, lighting and general décor. That might be true for artisans, but we at Patterson furniture believe the furniture to be very important.

We are not so arrogant as to claim that the furniture is all-important, but it sure has a big say in how your dining room looks, and what people will say about it once they leave your front door! A solid wood table looks and feels magnificent, and it is a shame to cover it with a white tablecloth - so don't!

Let the beauty of the wood show through, and if it is well made and finished, the odd spillage or two will not harm it. American cherry, walnut, oak and maple are too beautiful in their natural forms to be covered over, and wood is much more resilient than most people believe.

If you have ever visited Paul Revere's house in Boston you will know that. If you haven't, then do so.  He deserves your visit for his contribution to American history, but apart from that, the furniture in that house is magnificent. Yours might be as old one day if you choose wisely.

That aside, knowing how to design a dining room will help you to make the best use of the space you have available. Good use of space, light and color combined with the correct choice of dining room furniture, will enable you to design a dining room that your home deserves. Dining room furniture design is important, but it is even more important that you are happy with the result.
