Accent Rugs - How to Use a Rug in Home Décor

Accent rugs are intended to accentuate a specific area of your room. Knowing how to use a rug in home décor will enable you to use its decorative accents to draw the eye to areas of a room of which you are particularly proud. You can also use rugs to brighten up an otherwise drably decorated room.

By using rugs, you can add warmth to cold stone or tiled floors, or offer eye-catching floor coverings to define areas of interest in your home. They can provide focal points and provide a mediating color or design to bring together the various design elements in a particular room.

Rugs also help to reduce the wear on heavy traffic areas in your home, and while not being used as true accent rugs, such protection is nevertheless needed in many cases. They are easier to replace than carpets, which is why many people use them in front of fireplaces and other areas that experience heavy use or the possibility of accidental damage.

However, by far the major use of accent rugs is to catch the eye. It does what it says - it 'accentuates' a particular area, and this is often to lead the eye to what is standing on them.  There are many examples of this, some of which are described below.

With Accent Tables: A beautifully carved or decorated Oriental accent table will look great in any room, but it could also appear incomplete or out of place. If it is standing alone on a wooden floor it could look incongruous, but if standing on a beautiful rug that draws the eye, the combination will appear totally in place and draw the admiration that you are hoping for.

With Sectionals:  A horseshoe or three-sided sectional furniture arrangement looks good when situated away from a wall. However, unless facing a natural focal point such as a fireplace, it lacks direction. This is particularly true if it stands on a wooden floor or self-colored carpet.  The whole arrangement looks too bland.  By placing an accent rug in the center of the arrangement, it looks much more complete - even if you have a focal point.

Display Tables:  a display table, showing off a single antique vase or spectacular floral arrangement, looks much better if it has a base as well as the item it supports. By standing your table on a small accent rug, the entire display looks so much better.

Choosing Accent Rugs

Accent rugs should not necessarily clash with the overall décor of your room, although a bland room might look better with a brightly-colored rug. In general, however they also look good when they match your decorative style or theme. If your bedroom is decorated in a rock style, for example, then a Jimi Hendrix or Axl Rose rug would complete the theme.

In your bathroom, you could use a rug designed in a beach theme, where you don't need bright colors - soft yellows and browns work fine. Halls are ideal places - a runner running down the length of a hall not only protects the flooring from the high traffic, but also reduces noise.

However, while there is a difference between accent rugs and those chosen for high traffic areas, the former are frequently used for the latter purpose. Where that is the case, the rug will need regular cleaning - not just vacuuming, but also shampooing to keep it fresh. This is one of the reasons for using such rugs.

If you shampoo the door area of a wall-to-wall carpet, you have to do the whole thing - or one area will lo cleaner than the rest.  It's far better, and easier, to keep traffic to a smaller separate area and clean that. Not just that, but continual traffic and cleaning of a large carpet will wear down the pile, and you have to replace the entire carpet - not just the rug!

These are just some reasons for using accent rugs in your home. If you think about your home, you can likely come up with many more. Even if it is the only form of carpeting in a home floored entirely with wood blocks, if you know how to use a rug in your home décor, then that home will be a more welcoming and comfortable place -for you, your family and visitors.
